HDSAA - Developing Sport and Physical Activity in the Harborough District

championing harborough

The HDSAA recognise the importance of sports clubs and other local orgnisations who provide excellent opportunities for the community to participate in sport and physical activity. Our ambition is for the Olympics to be a catalyst for developing a legacy in the Harborough District of more people participating with excellent opportunities provided by the best clubs, coaches and facilities.

A section of our action plan has now been developed to identify the way forward in developing a legacy for the District. Download our action plan for 2008 - 2009 below.

Local Success

Helping to achieve sporting dreams

Hugely-talented youngsters from the district, who could be going for gold in the next Olympics, have been helped on their way by council & HDSAA funding.

Following Team Great Britain’s fantastic medal haul in the recent Olympics, the district’s own future hopefuls are gearing up for the 2012 London Games.

Some of those who could be vying for medal glory in four years time include Tom Owen (windsurfer), Paul Koenig (judo), Caley Demarco (gymnastics) and Lorna Twomlow (paralympic swimmer). They recently helped raise a flag in Welland Park to mark London becoming the next Olympic host city.

Rounders player Rachael Roberts, triathlete Jack Hall and tennis ace Charlie Tully are also potential stars of the future.

These youngsters are just some of those who have benefited from Harborough District Council grants to help them achieve their sporting dreams.

Tom Owen, who has recently joined the Olympic development programme, said: “The council grant has helped me a great deal. It has been put towards my training and my coaching qualification, which I have now achieved. I spent a large portion of the money on one-to-one training to focus on my weak points to improve my racing results.”

Rachael Roberts added: “It is very hard to get funding or sponsorship, as rounders is not an Olympic sport, so I am extremely grateful to receive this money. It means a lot to me.”

If anyone is interested in sponsoring them, contact Andrew Watson at Harborough District Council on 01858 828282.

Are you a Games Maker?

Support available for Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland 2012 Games Makers

The search is on for 70,000 volunteer Games Makers to ensure that the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are a success.
Volunteering at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games is a once in a lifetime experience and we want as many people from Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland as possible to take up this amazing opportunity.
London 2012 Games Makers will be the face of London 2012, with the chance to show what the UK is all about: excellence, passion and positivity. Set against this truly inspirational backdrop, Games Makers will build new friendships, develop skills and play an integral role at the heart of the largest event ever staged in the UK.
We realise that the costs associated with volunteering at the Games, particularly at a London venue, could be a barrier for some people. We have worked closely with local authorities across the county and Rutland to address this problem, and have developed the Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland 2012 Games Maker Grant Scheme.

The scheme allows people to claim up to £500 towards their travel and accommodation expenses (terms and conditions apply).
To access the grant scheme, applicants will need to have applied to be a London 2012 Games Maker and be in receipt of a confirmed position. The closing date for London 2012 Games Maker applications is 27th October 2010. Applications can be made online at www.london2012.com/volunteering

The Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland 2012 Games Maker Grant Scheme will open in 2011 following the completion of London 2012 Games Maker recruitment process. There are limited funds available so we would like to ask people to register their interest by sending their name, address and contact details to info@inspireleics.org.uk.
